What is IVDD in dogs?

Think of your dog’s spine like a chain of bones with soft, jelly-filled cushions (discs) between them to absorb shock. IVDD (short for Intervertebral Disc Disease) happens when these cushions harden, bulge, or burst open. When that happens, the disc presses against the spinal cord, causing sudden pain, nerve damage, weakness, or even trouble walking. It is similar to a severe "slipped disc" or "herniated disc" in humans.

Find the Perfect Fit

Step 1: Measuring the Chest

This is the most important measurement for this harness. Measure around the widest part of the dog's ribcage, usually right behind the front legs.

  • Tip: If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger size. The back brace is highly adjustable, so it is easier to tighten a larger brace than to force a small one.

Step 2: Checking the Back Length

Measure along the back, from the base of the neck to approximately 2 inches before the start of the tail.

  • Tip: A back brace should cover the upper back for stability but should not interfere with the dog’s hip movement.
Size Chest Measurement Back Measurement
Small
13" - 15" (33 - 38cm)
11" - 13" (28 - 33cm)
Medium
14" - 17" (35.6 - 43.2cm)
13" - 15.5" (33 - 39.4cm)
Large
18" - 21" (45.7 - 53.3cm)
15.5" - 17.5" (39.4 - 44.5cm)

* If your dog is between sizes, always prioritize the Back Measurement for a secure fit.

How to Put On the Back Brace

Follow these simple steps to ensure a secure, comfortable, and therapeutic fit for your dog.

Step 1

Turn to belly side, and open the chest straps.

Step 2

Turn to the back side, and unfasten the nectkstraps and loosen the leg straps.

Step 3

Slide the dog's back legs through the leg back straps, then pull the brace up over the back.

Step 4

Cross and fasten the neck straps in an "X" shape.

Step 5

Secure the belly straps.

Step 6

Pull and fasten the belly strap.

Step 7

Gently align the spine panel flat along your dog's back. Adjust and tighten the leg straps to ensure a snug, comfortable fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this back brace help with spinal cord injuries or slipped discs?
Think of a back brace like a supportive cast for your dog’s spine. When a dog has a slipped disc or a condition like IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), certain movements can worsen the pain or cause more damage. The brace holds the spine steady and gently lifts pressure off the pinched discs, giving the back a safe environment to heal.
Can this back brace help my dog recover after surgery?
Yes. After spinal surgery, your dog's back tissues and bones need time to mend without being twisted or strained. The brace acts as a protective shield, limiting dangerous movements while your pup is healing and rebuilding their strength.
Is a back brace effective for IVDD and arthritis?
Absolutely. For IVDD, it keeps the spine aligned and prevents further disc damage. For arthritis, it provides structure and warmth to stiff, aching joints, making it much more comfortable for your dog to stand up and move around.
Will a back brace completely cure my dog’s condition?
No, a brace is a supportive care tool rather than a standalone cure. While it greatly reduces pain, prevents re-injury, and improves daily mobility, it works best alongside a complete treatment plan from your veterinarian (which may include rest, medication, or physical therapy).
Will my dog still be able to move and play comfortably?
Yes! The brace is designed with flexible Plexi splints. This means it restricts harmful twisting or bending of the spine, but still allows your dog to walk, sit, sniff, and go to the bathroom completely naturally.
